In a word, horribly. Women stayed home to cook, clean, and live a life destined be a piece of property. Literally, women were considered to be property, just like chattel and slaves. Being owned by a rich and/or powerful person had its perks, I'm sure. The fact that Betsy Ross was honored in her lifetime actually represents a phenomenal leap forward for women's suffrage.
