The technology at the time would have been relatively primitive, and masks ranged from chemical-impregnated pouches attached to the full-face precursors to modern gas masks. For example, the french 'Tampon T' is a multi-layered fabric pouch with a face strap. It was usually issued with goggles to protect the wearers eyes. Full face gas masks tended to have asbestos-based filters and worked relatively well. Of course these days the asbestos will have degraded and it is VERY dangerous to wear such a mask unless the filter has been drilled out.
Everyone in Britain were issued a gas mask even the civilians, this was in case enemy troops had dropped poisonous gas. This method of warfare was favored in world war 1, however everyone still got a mask in world war 2 as an added precaution.
So they wouldn't get gassed
They did work. They took over all the mens jobs as they had to go to war. many women would be trained up as nurses and help the injured soldiers at war
There is no chance of an occurence of the World War 3 because of the mechanisms that have been put in place.
It is unknown who will be in World War 3 and those of us alive must work to see that there will never be a World War 3. If New Zealand needed to fight and help they would. They were exceptionally good warriors as were the Australians.
It had filters to prevent poisonous particles for being breathed in.
A Gas MAsk certainly

Peach pits were used during World War I as filter for their gas masks. They would soack them in urine and make a special charcoal out of them that was used for the mask.
