Most ships are crewed by International crew members from all over the world. Thusly, there are rarely unions or any rights for workers. Each crew member has an emergency duty to carry out in such an emergency, including evacuation and abandon ship, if necessary. Surviving crew members will often be sent within days to another vessel within their fleet to complete their contracts, if they wish to continue employment with the company. In the unlikely event any crew members do not survive the event, the cruise line will likely contact the family members on record and make arrangements to transport remains (if any) and pay out any wages earned along with any insurance monies for senior crew members. Each fleet of ships will follow protocols outlined based on the laws of the country the ship sails under.
