The 'Olive Branch Petition' was adopted by the Continental Congress 5 July 1775 as a last-gasp attempt to avoid war with Britain. Written by John Dickenson the Petition phrased their discontent in a manner that attempted to explain to King George 111 that the American colonists were unhappy with ministerial policy, not his own. They concluded their plea with a final statement of fidelity to the crown. However King George refused to accept and/or read the Petition, so it is unknown whether or it would have defused the upcoming hostilities.
If King George III had accepted the Olive Branch Petition, which sought to reconcile the American colonies with Britain, the course of history might have shifted dramatically. The American Revolutionary War could have been averted, leading to a more unified British Empire. Colonists may have experienced greater autonomy and representation, potentially delaying or altering the push for independence. This acceptance might have fostered a more gradual evolution toward self-governance rather than the revolutionary conflict that ultimately defined the United States.
