Christian Answer

According to The Bible there is not a plurality of Gods The bible being the oldest book then we cannot I say cannot go any further back than that So we will have to rely on the answer in the bible which states there is only one God and not a plurality If someone worships more than one God the bible God then they are worshiping false gods

There is only one God in 3 persons, called the Trinity. The Father creator of all, The Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ (God in the flesh) and the Holy Spirit (dwells in you when you become a Christian). Think of a triangle, it is one with three points, but only one. If the Trinity confuses you read C.S. Lewis' book "Mere Christianity". It explains the Trinity better than anything I have ever read on the subject.

General Answer

Polytheism existed long before the Bible and there were certainly books (or similar material) written before the Bible was (like the Epic of Gilgamesh). Each Polytheistic creed has its own story about how the gods came about and each story is very involved. Usually there is an event that creates a male and a female god and they reproduce creating a multitude of other gods.
