Francesco Redi, in 1668, showed that abiogenesis of maggots did not occur, and further experiments by Lazzaro Spallanzani (1768) and Louis Pasteur (1861) showed that many of the lifeforms thought "created" were those already invisibly present in the air or in other materials.
It was Francesco Redi's experiment. In 1664 Redi wrote his first work Osservazioni intorno alle vipere(Observations about the Viper). Redi is best known for, published in 1668 as Esperienze Intorno alla Generazione degl'Insetti (Experiments on the Generation of Insects). It proved that flies did not spontaneous generate. He put meat in a flask and covered it with cheesecloth so that air could get in but not flies. The other flask was a control and did not have cheesecloth. Only the flask without cheesecloth had flies.

Francesco Redi did an experiment in 1668 that disproved a belief that maggots spontaneously generated on rotting meat. His experiment was to place meat into sets of jars: one set he left open to the air, one set he covered with very fine gauze, one set was completely sealed. Maggots appeared on the meat in the open jars; flies laid eggs on the gauze but no maggots appeared because the scent of rotting meat provides no nourishment; nothing appeared on the meat in the completely sealed jars. Redi believed in spontaneous generation of many things, just not fly maggots. He is credited with beginning the experiments using controls method used now.
Francesco Redi was an Italian physician who in 1668 proposed a different hypothesis for the appearance of maggots from meat than spontaneous generation, formed by the Greek philosepher Aristotle. He tested his hypothesis by using a covered jar of meat and an uncovered jar of meat and concluded that maggots appeared because of the flies. wrrd
