"AD" is latin for "anno dimini," which translates roughly to "in the year of our lord." Basically, it means after Jesus was born.

However, it is no longer considered proper to use AD and BC (which means before Christ). Now, we use ACE and BCE, meaning before common era and after common era, respectively. But don't worry--all the years stay the same and no timeline in history change. Its just disrespectful to the 70% of the non-Christian world to make them structure their calander around a messiah they don't believe in.
