Pop Art was born of an optimistic view upon the age of mass production. Unlike Futurism, that just a few decades before had glorified industrialism, Pop Art wasn't interested in the machine age as a theme or aesthetic, but as a paradigme and a tool capable of changing society and Art. Borrowing iconography from popular culture, from the mass-produced object, the kitsch, etc, pop-artists were attempting to reconnect with society, in an obvious reaction to Abstract Expressionism - wich was felt as an increasingly elitist and intelectual path heading towards the alienation of art.

The effects of the technical revolution in printing techniques at the time could only be compared with what Gutenberg's printing press made for the dissemination of art and ideas during the Renaissance.

Warhol's repetitive serigraphies are therefor both iconic and iconoclast. They raise questions about originality and the age-old sacred aura of art, they are the first works of art wich ask "what is art?", or that at least phrased the question as Duchamp and others never had... The only difference between his Brillo boxes and the originals is the context in wich they are presented.

I could go on... A large number of books have been written on the subject. Most notably the works of Walter Benjamin and Clement Greenberg. So, you'll excuse me if my answer barely scratches the surface.
