Masha is a character that has recently joined the Tolstoyans at Telyatinki (Chertkov's home). She is not to be confused with Tolstoy's daughter, Masha.

She and Bulgakov become romantically involved.

Masha is the only fictional character in the novel and movie. Parini created her to give Valentin a love interest. It explains why the movie tells you that Valentin left for Prague, but makes no mention of any ongoing relationship with Masha or what became of Masha.

Masha Tolstoy died in 1906.
