In March of 1781, American General Nathan Greene lost a fierce battle to General Cornwallis at the Guilford Court House in North Carolina. Greene kept his composure, however, and the British, although victorious had to regroup. Cornwallis had to retreat in order to keep control of his supply base. In order to do this the British forces exhausted themselves in the forced march of almost 500 miles. As an aside, Cornwallis paid tribute to Greene as seen by his personal letters to a friend in New York.

Ultimately, American won through attrition. America made the war so costly for Great Britain for so long that Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown persuaded Parliament that it was better to lose the colonies than to continue in protracted and expensive war with no end in sight.
