Good question. People have to be afraid of things sometimes, and some people seem to like being afraid that the world is coming to an end. The ancient Mayan calendar ends in the year 2012. I'm not sure how significant that is, since the Mayan culture itself came to an end about 500 years ago. But the year 1000 passed, and the year 2000 passed without incident, and I think that this is just the next "point of fear" for some people.
