VIKINGS took over land controlled by Slavs
In Slavic languages such as Russian the Vikings are known as the Varyags (Varangians in English). The Vikings plied many of the riverine systems of what is today Ukraine, Russia and Belarus establishing trade, and later a political kingdom over the ancient Slavs. This period also created a common ancestral descent between the tribes due to political dominion.

The Slavs and Vikings united primarily through trade, cultural exchange, and intermarriage during the early medieval period. The Vikings, particularly the Varangians, traveled into Slavic territories, establishing trade routes and settlements. This interaction facilitated the spread of ideas, technology, and religious beliefs, leading to a blending of cultures. Over time, these connections contributed to the formation of early states, such as Kievan Rus', where Slavic and Viking elements coalesced.

Slavs and Vikings
The early Slavs were not conquered. They were conquerors. They conquered most of eastern Europe.
The three major divisions of Slavs in Eastern Europe are the West Slavs, East Slavs, and South Slavs. The West Slavs primarily include Poles, Czechs, and Slovaks. The East Slavs are represented by Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians. The South Slavs consist of groups such as Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Bulgarians, and Macedonians, each developing distinct languages and cultures over time.
