Julius Caesar masterminded the formation of the First Triumvirate, an informal three-man alliance with Crassus and Pompey which dominated Roman politics until the death of Crassus. However, Caesar was not a military leader at the time. Although he had conducted military campaigns in Spain, when he formed the triumvirate he was a politician. In fact, he formed the alliance to strengthen his political position and further his political aims. At that time it was Pompey who was Rome's great military leader. Caesar became the famous military leader when he embarked on the conquest of Gaul a few years later.
