What are the 6 reasons for confederation and why did they contribute to a federal union?

The Six Reasons For Confederation: 1. Political deadlock led to the Great Coalition in the United Province of Canada. Political Deadlock is when two parties have the same rights and power. he two main party leaders John A. McDonald and George Brown were enemies until John stated that he will join forces with any party to help his home. 2. A railway linking to the colonies was needed to increase trade and to move troops. And it would be less expensive for moving goods. However the two railways both met financial troubles. 3. Cancellation of the Reciprocity treaty by the United States in 1865 ended free trade between British North America (BNA) and United States (US). This was because when US wanted to attack and take over (If below does not happen), they wouldn't feel sorry for themselves when Canada was taken over. 4. There was a threat to American expansion into the British North America (BNA). This is called Manifest Destiny. 5. Great Britain wanted her colonies to be more self sufficient. Otherwise known as the end of the corn laws. Another thing is that they wanted to not pay tariffs or taxes 6. Some people (especially in Canada West) want to expand settlement into Rupert's land and the North West Territories. The government thought this as well so that this area would not be easily taken over.
