The Soviet Union had many strengths and many weaknesses. One important and historic problem it faced was in the area of agriculture. The prime example of this was that the USSR had to buy grain from the US in the 1970's to feed the Soviet people.

Russia had a command economy primarily from the early 1920s, following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. During this period, the state controlled all means of production and central planning dictated economic activities. The command economy was characterized by state ownership of industries, collectivized agriculture, and extensive regulation of resources and labor. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia transitioned towards a market-based economy.
A Sovkhoz is a type of state farm in the former Soviet Union, established during the early 20th century as part of the collectivization policies. Unlike collective farms (kolkhozes), which were owned by the farmers themselves, Sovkhozes were owned and operated by the state, with workers receiving wages rather than a share of the produce. They were intended to boost agricultural production and were often mechanized and organized along industrial lines. The concept played a significant role in Soviet agricultural policy until the dissolution of the USSR.

Basically government control and management of all industry and much of agriculture as well- Collective farms, ( there were two different types, Kolkhoz ( Collective Farms) and SovKhoz- Soviet or state farms owned directly by the Ministry of Agriculture- no US equivalent. the central govt dictated economic policy- to the Steel industry- produce X number million tons for Basic Industry!- without regard to what in this country would be market economy, private business competition, etc. Big Brother was at the controls!
