The Turkish armed forces consist of about 500,000 men/women plus another 400,000 reserves.

It is the largest armed force in NATO on the ground in Europe.

Bulgaria reckons it could hold off a Turkish invasion for about five hours -most unlikely to happen).

However, Turkey called an emergency meeting of NATO members immediately after Israel attacked the flotilla bound for Gaza with food and medical supplies, killing at least nine and injuring about 50 of the passengers.

The meeting ended with a single-statement by NATO Secr.Gen. Fogh Rasmussion which demanded Israel's immediate release of the passengers and ships. That sounds lots like Turkey threatened to leave NATO.

The EU and US have been bungling relations with Turkey at least since 1973 when it applied to join the European Union (then called European Economic Community) and we are now seeing Turkey emerge as a powerful regional player drawing closer to Iran, Syria and Russia. Moreover, yesterday or the day before, Turkey announced termination of all military relations with Israel.
