Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt
Since the Nile River flows backwards, the upper part of Egypt is actually named lower Egypt. The Nile does not flow backwards but it does flow north to the Mediterranean Sea -- the northern area near the sea including Cairo and the Nile Delta is called Lower Egypt, while the southern area is called Upper Egypt.
Lower Egypt is the top and to the north, Upper Egypt is the bottom and to the south.
Some historians consider Menes do have been the first king after Egypt's unification. He is claimed to have joined upper and lower Egypt into a single state around 2925 BCE. He is also credited with the finding of the capitol of Memphis, near Cairo.
Cairo is Located in the Upper part of Egypt.

Egypt is traditionally divided into two sections: Upper Egypt in the south and Lower Egypt in the north. Lake Nasser is in Upper Egypt which is the southern part of Egypt. The terms Upper and Lower Egypt date back to the ancient kingdoms. Upper refers to the upper reaches of the Nile River in the southern, higher elevations of Africa. Lower refers to the lower levels of the river around the Nile Delta in the north, where Cairo is located.
Upper Egypt refers to the southern part of Egypt close to the borders of Sudan, and it includes Luxor and Aswan and Nubia and also other places. Lower Egypt is the Northern part of Egypt which includes Cairo and Alexandria and other cities.

The crowns of upper and lower Egypt were combined because King Menes combinded upper and lower Egypt. He decidd to combine upper and lower Egypt and the crowns.
He lived some where in lower Egypt. But lower Egypt is upper Egypt because upper is lower and lower is upper.
For most of pharaonic Egypt's history, Thebes was the administrative center of Upper Egypt. Today the capital of Egypt is Cairo.

Upper Egypt is in the South of Egypt and is so called because the Nile, which is considered the life blood of Eygpt, converges in the Sudan (South) and flows South to North. Because of this, Southern cities like Luxor and Aswan are actually located in 'Upper Egypt' and northern places like Cairo are in 'Lower Egypt.'
