Crucifixion, as a form of state execution was abolished in the fourth century, because the Christian emperors did not want to grant criminals the dignity of dying the same way as Jesus did. They then had to use other equally cruel or even crueler methods of torture and execution, including skinning alive and the 'wheel'.
