They were not the same. Indentured servants were to serve 7 years, but often they left before they finished their time. They could blend in so it made it hard to find them, but any person who was black was a slave and needed a pass to leave the plantation. Indentured servants were paid and free after 7 years. Slaves were never paid and were considered property.

How were indentured servants different from slaves?

Indentured servants were freed after a set number of years. The difference is the servant chose to work for someone. The slave is froced to work for someoneAn indentured servant was a worker that was not paid a wage, but worked until his travelling debt was paid off. Unlike slaves, they were also fed and sheltered After it was paid off they would be set free and were often given a small part of land for them to live on. However with slaves, slave owners said "f*ck that sh*t" and worked their slaves until they were had nothing left in them. They were given the bare necessities and lived a sh*t life against their will. The main difference between a slave and an indentured servant was that the servant would one day be a free citizen. Basically, the indentured servant was working off a debt. They were given room and board, and the wages they earned went to pay their debt. After a number of years, when the debt was fully paid, the individual was free to go. The slave, on the other hand, would never be free, except for the unlikely event that their owner decided to grant them freedom. Unlike the indentured servant, the slave was considered the property of the owner for life.

In what way was the life of an indentured servant different from that of a slave?

Indentured servants were contracted to work for a specific period of time in exchange for passage to a new country or other benefits, while slaves were considered property for life. Indentured servants could eventually gain their freedom and sometimes even acquire land or other opportunities, whereas slaves had no such prospects for independence. Additionally, indentured servants typically had legal rights and protections that slaves did not.
