Trier witch trials happened in 1585.
Roman Emperor Constantine lived in Trier during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. He was in Trier from around 306 AD, when he was proclaimed emperor, until about 310 AD. During this time, he undertook significant construction and development projects in the city, which served as one of his key imperial residences.
The story goes that Trier was founded around 2000 BC by a prince named Trebeta, who was originally from Assyria (a kingdom that was mainly in what is now northern Iraq). Supposedly he wandered for a while into Europe after he was overthrown, and eventually settled in Trier. That story was never written down until about 800 years ago, or about 3200 years after it supposedly happened- so it's unlikely to be true. The likely true story is that the Romans built the first permanent settlement there- after defeating a Germanic tribe called the Treveri- around the time of Emperor Augustus. The new settlement was named "Augusta Treverorum" (which is basically Latin for "the Treverian city of Augustus"), and would eventually become a fairly large and important city.
There are catacombs beneath Rome, Naples, and Palermo in Italy, as well as London, Paris, Alexandria, Vienna, and Edinburgh. They are also found in Znojmo (Czech Republic), Odessa (Ukraine), Carlow (Ireland), Rabat (Malta), Lima (Peru), and Granada (Spain). Similar structures are found in Anatolia (Turkey), Trier (Germany) and Kiev in Russia. The most famous example is the underground tunnel complex under Rome, Italy, used before and during the days of the Roman Empire. It was used by early Christians as a burial chamber during their persecution, and not usually as a hiding place (as is depicted in many popular 20th Century stories).
The Western Roman Empire was quickly declining and sinking into the 'dark ages'. In 331AD Emperor Constantine moved the Capital from the city of Rome to the city of Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople. Constantinople geographic location gave it supreme strategi placement and incredible amounts of wealth. It was situated in the center of what remained of the Roman Empire which also made it very appealing.
