The Communist Party of the Soviet Union was effectively banned in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This decision was made by the Russian government under President Boris Yeltsin, who sought to dismantle the communist system and transition Russia to a market economy and democracy. In 1993, the Constitutional Court of Russia ruled that the Communist Party had been operating illegally since its ban, further solidifying its prohibition. However, the party was later re-established in 1993 as the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, which operates legally today.

In 1990, a referendum was held in all of the 16 republics of the USSR, and all 16 of them voted to secede from the USSR, even Russia itself. So it was done, as the vote mandated, and then Russia became the more-or-less democratic nation that it is today, in which the communist party is no longer in control, but corruption remains very severe, and Vladimir Putin exerts a quasi-dictatorial power.
China and Russia have always been at odds. China has not wanted Russia in it's sphere of influence in Asia. The fact that China was closed for many years until the 1970's makes a difference. The Chinese communist party has a different structure than the Russian party. Even today the Chinese communist approach is much more overly ruthless than Russia. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 communism in Russia has had to change to seem more democratic, but it is far from it. Both are in the United nations and are part of the security council and both have nuclear bombs. A balance of power must be maintained.
Russia's communist part today is known as the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. It's the second largest political party in Russia today.

Yes, the American Communist Party still exists today, operating under the name Communist Party USA (CPUSA). Established in 1919, it has undergone various transformations and has faced significant decline in membership and influence, especially after the Cold War. The party continues to advocate for socialist principles and participates in progressive coalitions, focusing on issues like labor rights, social justice, and economic equality. However, it remains a small political entity in the broader American political landscape.
