I have a 58 year old Wisteria tree growing along the gutters and roof of our house and dripping down in May with beautiful long tendrils of pink/purple flowers. We have removed it from the gutters and added an addition onto the house for it to grab onto because the Wisteria vines are so powerful they can pull the eaves away from the house! It's so magnificent that people will stop their cars and some even get out to come ask us what it is. There are many different varieties of the Wisteria and some bloom right from spring to Fall. Mine only blooms for two weeks in May. The long tendrils that you see reaching out to grab ya, is what you cut off the Wisteria. It has no leaves! You train the leafy branches where you want them. If you think your Wisteria is getting too bushy you can prune a few leafy branches off during the spring and summer. Usually climbing along the side of your house or fence and some people allow them to grow up their trees. I prefer draping the long leafy branches along the side of the house on the porch area. This plant (made into a tree) looks awesome spilling over a arbor. Before winter (if you have harsh winters especially) lay hay or sod on top of the root system and cover your Wisteria with clear plastic to stop frost from killing it. Wisteria trees are made by using those long tendrils to continuously wrap around and around until it forms a trunk. If you find some of your Wisteria growing close by then by all means plant it in a 10 inch pot and cultivate it for future use. It doesn't take long for them to grow. BEWARE! The pods (like long pea pods) SHOULD BE CUT OFF! They are highly poisonous so keep children and pets away!
