The Marquis de Lafayette was a French leader and general supportive of the American Revolution. He was appointed General by the Continental Congress in 1777 before France had even acknowledged its support. He was wounded in 1777 and endured hardship along with General Washington during the long winter.
Inspired by the ideas of the revolution, Lafayette bought his own ship and arrived in America in 1777.
