It's hard to answer "what it was like" because i wasn't actually there, but probably a very harrowing experience, as gladiators were often slaves, fighting for their freedom. they would probably be fighting their fellow slaves, and also on some occasions wild animals, such as bears and lions.

The lifestyle of a gladiator is very harsh and tough, their job is to try and survive with wild beasts or with people with swords and daggers. They don't even get to eat any type of healthy food.

Generally gladiators were slaves who were turned into professional fighters. They lived and trained in the gladiatorial schools and most of them were owned by the trainers. They fought three or four times a year in the amphitheatre, the arena for the gladiatorial games. A few gladiators were free men who chose to become gladiators.
