Audie Murphy, 15th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division
Matt Urban, 60th Infantry, 9th ID
Llewellyn Chilson, 179th Infantry, 45th ID
William O. Darby, Rangers, 10th Mountain Division
Robert T. Frederick, 1st Special Service Force
Murphy and Urban are both said to be the most decorated soldier of WWII. But Murphy earned almost all of his as an enlisted man, and thus you can believe he really, truly earned them. Urban was an officer throughout, and never earned a Distinguished Service Cross, while Murphy did. Chilson was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (second only to the Medal of Honor) three times in WWII - the only soldier to earn three, though several earned two. Darby created the modern Rangers in the army and led a provisional Ranger regiment at Anzio, until it was virtually wiped out. The army only had six battalions of Rangers in the war and three of them were with Darby at Anzio. Darby was later killed, a week before the war ended, while serving as assistant division commander of the 10th Mountain Division, by a single German shell which found him on a mountaintop in Italy. All the others on this list lived through the war. Frederick was awarded two Distinguished Service Crosses and a movie was made about his command, "The Devil's Brigade". Frederick and the Brigade (1st Special Service Force, a joint American Canadian outfit) were also at Anzio, and set up their HQ a quarter mile BEHIND the German lines. Frederick was wounded nine times during the war, which shows he was not like most generals - he was to be found where people got hurt. Frederick commanded a "provisional airborne division" during the "second D-Day" landings in southern France, August 15, 1944.
