In the aftermath of the Civil War, White Southerners interpreted the events in a religious framework which had wide-ranging historical implications. Many survivors of the confederacy believed that their suffering was divinely inspired to "baptize" them in the blood of the struggle in order to purify and bring them in a proper relationship of Grace with God.
