The thesis (or, purpose) of the Gettysburg Address consists of several parts. First, the Address described the event being celebrated by it and around it (in the town itself on the day itself in which the Address was delivered) in connection with previous history. Second, it claimed that mere words cannot do any more to honor the event (the military victory that occurred several months prior) than the soldiers did by fighting victoriously in it. Third, it called the listeners to keep fighting on behalf of the precious gifts of freedom and equality, without which truly democratic society cannot exist.
