This was crippling the American economy and it gave the war hawks the last little push they needed to convince the country to go to war. However, this is ironic because the resulting war damaged the economy worse than before the war. In fact the only real battle the Americans won was in Louisiana. A victory won after a peace treaty had already been signed but hadn't yet reached America. In this war our capital and White House were burnt. The only thing that saved the city and the house was a torrent of rain that sprang up from seemingly nowhere and lasted for hours.
