For the Christians, the largest element of the army was led by Raymond of Toulouse (1,200 cavalry and 8,500 infantry); Godfrey of Bouillon and Robert of Normandy each led around 1,000 cavalry and 7,000 infantry. These troops were mainly "French" in the loosest sense of the word, since the Norman contingent did not consider themselves to be Frenchmen. The word used for them at the time ("Franks" or Ifranj in Turkish) is probably a better term.
