Women's rights did not truly regress under Napoleon. In fact, they improved slightly. For example, women were given more property rights under the Napoleonic code, and divorce was legalized. However, in marriages, husbands still had mostly all the power. Like if a husband committed adultery it was not even grounds for divorce unless he brought the mistress home, but if a wife committed adultery, she could be sent to jail for three months.
The Louisiana Civil Code
Napoleon's Civil Code, also known as the Napoleonic Code, was significant because it established a comprehensive legal framework that emphasized equality before the law, property rights, and the secular nature of the state. Enacted in 1804, it abolished feudal privileges and laid the groundwork for modern legal systems in many countries. The Code promoted the principles of the French Revolution, including individual liberties, but also reinforced patriarchal authority in family law. Its influence extended beyond France, shaping legal codes in various nations around the world.
