White southerners who supported Reconstruction were referred to as "Scalawags", while northerners who came south to assist were called "Carpetbaggers,", an equally derisive term inferring they carried everything they owned in a carpetbag and could move quickly. Both groups traveled the South for their own personal economic gain.
Reconstruction was what the period of rebuilding the south was after the civil war.

Radical Reconstruction was the name of one of the phases of reconstruction: the one instigated by a faction that called themselves the Radical Republicans. The Radical Republicans who swept to power in 1866 considered the first phase of Reconstruction (called the Presidential Reconstruction since it was led by Presidents Lincoln and Johnson) too moderate. In 1873 white supremacist soutern Democrats who called themselves Redeemers returned to power and ended Reconstruction.
They were derisively called Copperheads...after the venomous snakes.
Southerners who saw an advantage to backing the Reconstruction of the South represented the majority of Southern Republicans. Much like the northerners who were against the Civil War (Copperheads), these southerners earned a derisive nickname. They were called "Scalawags".
