Thebes, also known as Waset, was an ancient Egyptian city located within the perimeter of Luxor. Situated on the east bank of the Nile, it would grow to be the largest city in the world by 1400 BC with a population reaching 80,000. The city flourished until it was ransacked by the invasion of the Assyrians in 664 BC.
