it was a power company run by the federal government.
The Tennessee Valley Authority was a true boon for the people of Tennessee. This government owned corporation surely saved the lives of many poor people.
The Tennessee Valley Authority [TVA] was a US government agency set up to develop and exploit the tremendous electrical power generating potential of the Tennessee Valley watershed. TVA, with the US Corps of Engineers, planned, designed, and constructed a series of dams and hydroelectric generating plants, with attendant high voltage power distribution systems. Being as this occurred during the Depression, it significantly contributed to the reduction of unemployment, and provided relatively inexpensive electric power to hundreds of thousands of folks.
It is NOT harnessed by getting zapped by lightning. It can be harnessed in a variety of ways. (i.e. wind, water, battery power.) Please and thank you, Adria xx
The Tennessee Valley Authority built 40 dams (think beavers)to control flooding and also produced cheap electricity. The dams held back water widening canals thus enabling shipping. The TVA also planted forests to conserve soil. the trees held the dirt together thus stopping erosion.
Power companies resented the cheaper energy which was available through the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The power companies also felt that the government's involvement in the power business was unconstitutional.

Tennessee Valley Authority
The Tennessee Valley Authority was created by an act of congress in 1933, during the Great Depression. It basically supplies electricity to parts of US states in the "Tennessee Valley". Its critics claimed that it was too much governmental interference in the private sector. Some called it "socialism". It was very controversial in its time.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) created around 49 reservoirs and lakes as part of its water management and power generation projects in the Tennessee River Valley region.
The Tennessee Valley Authority's primary function is to generate electric power, largely through hydroelectric generators running from water in the Tennessee River Valley, and to distribute that power to consumers and industry. The TVA produces a very high percentage of its power through hydroelectric power (which is renewable by the way); one of the highest in the U.S.
Eastern rural areas drastically affected by the Great Depression were assisted by the formation of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which began in 1933.
