The western part of the Roman Empire ceased to hold north-western Africa when it fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples who carved up this part of the empire and established their own kingdoms. One of these peoples, the vandals, established the Vandal kingdom in north-western Africa. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist into the Middle Ages. Historians have coined the term Byzantine Empire to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part is Byzantine Empire. The Romans did not use this term, they called it Roman Empire and Romania (this referred to this empire and not the country which was later called Romania). The term Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the Greek city which was redeveloped, turned into the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and renamed Constantinople by the emperor Constantine the Great in 330. It is used to indicate the fact that not long after the fall of the western part, this empire became centred on Greece and Greek in character after it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620, some 150 years after the fall of the west. The Byzantine Empire was weakened by wars with Persia and invasions into the Balkan Peninsula by the Slavs. The Byzantines lost Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and eastern Libya to the new and expanding power of the Arabs. They then lost Turkey to the Seljuk Turks. Finally, in the early 16th century the Byzantine territories in south-eastern Europe were taken over by the Ottoman Turks who then captured its capital, Constantinople.

Because its balanced and built not to fall over.
Christianity transformed the religious map of the Roman Empire. It became the religion of the masses of the empire in Late Antiquity. Mainstream Christianity (the early form of the Catholic and the Orthodox churches) became the state religion of the empire, whilst other Christian sects were branded heretic and persecuted, particularly Arian Christianity, which was popular around the empire. Catholicism at that time was called Latin or Western Christianity and it was the religion of the western part of the empire. The Orthodox Church was called Greek or Eastern Christianity and was the religion of the eastern part of the empire. The pagan Roman religion did not disappear, but it became sidelined and was persecuted.

No, the only Muslims that came that far were Turks. They did not attack Byzantium until 1453. That was the first attempt to advance and the city fell.
