natural rights
Thomas Jefferson
John Locke (Not John Locked) was the inventer of The Social Contract. Locke's Contract states that people had certain unalienable rights, mainly life, liberty, and property. The authors of the Declaration of Independence were protesting British rule over the American colonies, claiming that the British government had violated these rights. (The Declaration of Independence features "the pursuit of happiness" instead of property as the third unalienable right) *Unalienable rights mean rights that are automatically given to everyone*

In The Declaration of Independence, the governmentâ??s relationship is as protector of the rights of the people. It is only through this relationship, the government is allowed to continue to exist. At this point, the government must cease to exist.
The authors of the Declaration of Independence cited a range of grievances against King George III and British rule, including violations of the colonies' natural rights, such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They argued that the British government had imposed unjust laws and taxes without representation, denied the colonists their rights, and maintained a standing army in peacetime without consent. Ultimately, they declared independence to establish a government that would secure their rights and respond to the will of the people. Their assertion was that when a government becomes destructive, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.
The authors of the Declaration of Independence argued against taxation without representation and for religious freedom.

John Hancock was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence. His signature appears very large because he was very proud.
