He thought learning a dead language for prayer was silly. 2) Henry was already the head of state/government and when he started the Church of England he made himself the head of the church as well. This was a huge issue for a lot of devout Catholics, who believed that only the Pope could be the head of the church, as he was placed their by God. As far as many devout Catholics were concerned, it was blasphemy.

In Henry VIII reign he was head of the church. He changed the bible to English but services were still in Latin.
The pope never allowed it. Henry left the Church and proclaimed himself head of the Church of England and then gave himself permission to divorce Catherine.
There were no protestants before that time in England. The only reason Henry VIII broke away from the church is so he could divorce Catharine of Aragon (divorce was not allowed in the Catholic Church) and marry Anne Boleyn. Actually, Martin Luther had already made his split from the Catholic Church before Henry had is 'little problem.' He defended the Church against Martin Luther's heresies and received the title of 'Defender of the Faith' from the pope.
