On July 1, 1863, the same day the Battle of Gettysburg began, the Battle of Vicksburg was also taking place. While Gettysburg is one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War, Vicksburg was crucial as it gave the Union control over the Mississippi River. Both battles significantly impacted the course of the war, with Vicksburg ultimately falling to Union forces on July 4, 1863, just days after Gettysburg concluded.
Probably the Union forces. Neither side lost any ground, nor was either army pushed away from its positions. But, the southerners were doing all the attacking that day, and failed to carry their objectives, which were to drive Union troops off high ground at both ends of their line. Thanks to though to many brave soldiers especially those of the First Minnesota Regiment we stayed in the fight.
By the end of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, Union forces, particularly those under the command of General John F. Reynolds and later General George Meade, managed to hold the high ground, specifically Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge. Although the Confederates pushed Union troops back through the town of Gettysburg, the Union's strategic positioning on elevated terrain provided a significant advantage for the subsequent days of battle. This high ground was crucial for the Union's defensive efforts and ultimately contributed to their victory at Gettysburg.
There was not a clear winner on Day One. One could argue a Confederate victory, but the Federal forces did seize the high ground and did not relinquish it. That proved to be the deciding factor in the battle.
The cemetery at Gettysburg was created to honorably bury the white Union dead from the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863. Part of the battlefield was in a cemetery along the union fishhook line. The ground the north occupied was named Cemetary Ridge. The soldiers cemetery was added after the battle next to this one.
