Colonials (and others) were motivated by the opportunity for pay, by chances to gain personal glory of some kind, and even by loyalty to the imperial power controlling their home-lands, among many other motivations.
It never stopped being referred to as the great war as a matter of fact. People till this day still sometimes call WWI "The great War" and WWII "The War". Though I'm sure you have also heard people call WWI "The war to end all wars" as well.

People who hate war because they don't know the philosophy of war, what caused war, etc. Before World War II broke, America was in great depression. The war helped America out of the Great Depression. Why? And, still many people are duped to think that Frank Roosevelt solved America out of depression...
