Edward VIII abdicated in order to marry Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American divorcee. After he relinquished the throne and, of course, the title and position of King, he was named Duke of Windsor. He and his Duchess ultimately settled in Paris. I believe it was the choice of the Duke and Duchess to do that, as far as I am aware it was not a forced exile.
