Frederick Douglass WAS a Republican. He stated so publicly, in print and speeches throughout his adult life calling it "the party of freedom and progress."

Frederick Douglass did not like political parties. He was nominated as vice president on the Equal Rights Party but it was without his consent. He was a speaker at the Republican Convention in 1888 but he worked with both Democrats and Republicans.
