Guy Fawkes was baptized an Anglican. He converted to the Holy Roman Church after Trent and served against Elizabeth I in the attempted coup in her later life. He became involved in Roman Catholic plots against James I and took part in what is known as the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. This was an attempt by Romanists to wipe out the English establishment including all but one of the Royal Family. The exception was the future 'Winter Queen,' Elizabeth of Bohemia! She was twelve years old and her fate was to be married to a future Roman Catholic contender for the throne after her Father and brother were wiped out by the plotters.

Interestingly, James was quite prepared to give toleration to Roman Catholics; after all, his mother was one. He considered himself to be a Catholic,, not a Roman, but he was a strong follower, or believer, in the Ecumenical Councils of the early church of the first thousand years and only opposed the post Trent Church. His wife, Anne of Denmark was one, so he was no enemy. All he asked was that they took an oath of loyalty to the Crown as everyone else did. The Romans were for the most part quite willing, but the pope denied them permission! Guy Fawkes was a Roman Catholic, a sightly different thing!
