He was very sporty when he was younger, famous for his hunting prowess as well as his skill at a sport similar to tennis. However, as a wealthy king he was also extravagant. He loved to throw huge feasts and banquets - more food = more fat. Eventually it got to the point where he needed a hoist to be moved since he was so heavy. His decreasing willingness to actually run the country meant he wouldn't need to travel so much, and his love for meat caused him to suffer gout, which killed him. (gout was sometimes known as 'The king's disease', or 'the rich man's disease' because of the association of meat and wealth).
