In 1921, Adolf Hitler, a decorated veteran of the First World War, became leader of the "Nationalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei" (NSDAP), the National Socialist German Workers' Party. This was the forerunner of the Nazi Party.

In 1923 Hitler attempted a "coup d'etat" in Munich and this became known as the "Beer Hall Putsch". As a result of the failed coup Hitler was put in prison until 1924, and it was during his year's imprisonment he wrote the infamous "Mein Kampf" (My Struggle). Mein Kampf is a large tome, and presumably writing it kept him very busy and quiet.
