Who came to the colonies as an indentured servant?

Any white person

Analyze why colonies needed indentured people?

The colonies had two types of society classes. A form of Aristocracy, which was modeled after those in England, and refers to the upper class or privileged class of society. The other class was the Indentured Servants, which included the poor, either White or Black. Temporary servitude was one of the means by which poor Europeans could come to America. In return for the ship passage they would sign a contract, or indenture, agreeing to work without pay for a specific period of time, usually three to five years. there was no social stigma attached to this type of servitude. Moreover, indentured servants had specific legal rights that could be enforced in court. When an indentured servant's time was up, he or she entered into American society with full legal rights. Upon becoming free, servants were entitled to "freedom dues." These included a suit of clothes, farming tools, and in some colonies, 50 acres of land. Nearly a third of the Europeans who came to America before the Revolutionary War, paid for their transport with temporary bondage. However, the issue of Black slaves would slow down the indentured servant process. This was because and indentured servant would eventually be free. Whereas a Black slave was property, and it was cheaper in the end to own a Black Slave, than to have an indentured servant working for you.

When was slavery institutionalized?

The first slave owner on American soil was black. It was blacks who brought slavery to the US and blacks who demanded it be protected by law. African Anthony Johnson demanded that the court of the Virginia Colony declare a fellow African, John Casor, not an indentured servant but a "servant for life." Europe didn't have a system of slavery but Africa did - and it was robust - and it included enslaving whites long before the first blacks arrived in the Americas. On March 8, 1655, the court of the Virginia Colony sided with Anthony Johnson legalizing slavery in the US. Ironically Johnson, who had been a slave in Angola when sold to Europeans by his chief, was brought to the US as an indentured servant and freed when his term was up. He went on to become a major property holder in the US with white and black indentured servants.

What did a indentured servant do?

An indentured servant is a person who either willingly wants to serve, or is kidnapped and forced to. An indentured servant usually serves from 4 to 7 years. They are provided with food, shelter, and clothing. At the end of their servitude, if the master is gracious enough, would give them clothing, food, a rifle, and scarcely some land. Only people of the white sort would be an indentured servant. If you were a slave, you could not become and indentured servant.

Where would you find an indentured servant?

You would find an indentured servant in the South. An indentured servant is, typically, a white male who ventured from Britain during the Colonial Era who needed money and land to begin a life in America. They worked for a couple years on a farm or plantation and were later "paid" for their services.

Why do you think indentured servants became less common as slavery grew?

Indentured servants were suppose to work for 7 years, but often after a couple of years they would leave the indentured contract and faded into the population. When that happened they couldn't be separated from other people because they were white. The slave on the other hand would always be a slave no matter where he/she went because they were black. To leave a plantation they needed a pass and any white person could stop them asking to see the pass. Slaves were owned by another person and considered property an indentured servant was a worker under contract so it was easier to buy a slave for the same amount of money spent on the indentured servant. The slave couldn't escape easily and could be picked out because he/she was black.

What is the difference in slaves and white indentured servants?

Slaves are those people who do not choose to work, but are forced to by a master or slave owner, usually indefinitly or for a very lenghtlly period of time. An example would be a Egyptian slave or an African-American slave in the United States prior to the American Civil War (1861-1885). An indentured servant are those people who choose to work, usually to pay off some form of debt. Then once the debt is paid off then they are free to do or work for whom ever they want. Indentured servants were common in the centuries following Columbus' "discovery" of the New World. During that time it was incredibly expenisve to travel to the New World, but one way to pay for the trip was to become an indentured servant. In that instance a company or very wealthy individual, would pay to ship the person and any supplies that his/her would have with them to the New World. Upon arriving at the New World the person would become the shippers indentured servant, having to do work for him/her usually working in the fields or around the shippers house. Then after about 5 years or so, depending on how long the agreed upon terms were, then the indentured servant would be set free and free to start a new life within the New World. Furthermore, the shipper upon releasing the servant would also give him/her some money to help build a new life. So the difference between a slave and a indentured servant is profound.
