Virginia was initially a private company or corporate colonly from 1607 to 1624. King James I revoked the Virginia company's charter in 1624 and Virginia became a royal colony. Virginia became self governing after independence.

Virginia was a self-governed colony when it under the Virginia charter. After the English Civil War though, Virginia's charter was cancelled and became a royal colony under the rule of the British crown.
