William Shakespeare's mother was Catholic. His father John was Jewish. so technically, William wasn't a Jew. However, if one determines oneself freely, it is very likely that William Shakespeare felt himself as a Jew, or at best as a "bastard" since the Jewish philosophy irrigates his work to a vast extend. Furthermore, it is likely that he spent his so called "Lost Years" in a free school, i.e. a clandestine Jewish school.

For more info on the subject, please refer to the English version of a book due in September 2011at the Edwin Mellen University Press, under the title : " Was William Shakespeare Jewish", by Ghislain Muller. (French version already available at: http://www.mellenpress.com/mellenpress.cfm?bookid=8052&pc=9 )
