They were in Nordwind, the German offensive south of the Bulge near Strasbourg in Alsace. They were still working primarily as the combat engineer battalion assigned to Gen. LeClerc's 2nd French Armored Division, as they had been since arriving in Normandy with Patton's Third Army in late July/early August. After the liberation of Paris, they were assigned to Gen. Patch's 7th Army and took part in the liberation of Strasbourg, the Vosges Campaign, etc. 7th filled the wide gap in the Allies' lines when Patton raced north during the Battle of the Bulge. January-March were hard months for the 165th and 7th Army. The 165th lost a number of men, though they did not have to man the line as infantrymen as they had done earlier north of Paris, at least to my knowledge.
My father was in the 149th combat engineer battalion. They landed on DDay on Omaha Beach. Their boat hit a mine coming in and several men were injured or killed. My father was injured, but able to go on.
I am unable to find any record of the 1138th Engineer Combat Battalion being stationed in Iceland. Furthermore, I am unable to find any record of an 1138th Engineer Combat Battalion being activated during WW 2. Please feel free to contact me with the source of your information, so that I may continue research on your behalf. It would be my pleasure to assist you. Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com
US combat engineers call themselves sappers, so yes the 37E has sappers. That answer isn't necessarily true. Not all Combat Engineers are considered "Sappers." There is actually a "Sapper" school, which is sort of the "Ranger" school for Combat Engineers. Yes, there ARE Sappers in the 37th Engineer Battalion but only because they have sent people to Sapper School, which is also located at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, just like the Combat Engineer AIT training. Trust me, I was there. I also was in the 37th Engineer Bn. and I went to Sapper School.

I don't know if the entire battalion received the Combat Action Ribbon but I do know that H Co (redesignated L Co) did receive the CAR. Most members of the battalion also received their Combat Action Ribbon during Operation Iraqi Freedom I. They battalion has since returned to Iraq in September/October of 2007. All but a handful (those few who remained behind at Camp 15) of Marines in 3/23 received the Combat Action Ribbon for Desert Storm. The link below gives a list of the units that were involved in the Battle of the Bulge. It lists the 285th Combat Engineer Battalion as well as a 285th Observation unit. This division was not part of a division. It was probably an independent unit that was attached to the Army. It did receive credit for 3 Campaigns: Ardennes-Alsac, Central Europe and Rhineland.
