In the Bay of Pigs Invasion which lasted from April 17- April 19, 1961 was an attempt by then American President John F. Kennedy to oust Fidel Castro and the communist regime out of Cuba.
Because it was such a failure. The US was supporting the attempts of Cubans to overthrow the Castro Government. When the attempt failed the US ended up looking rather foolish. It also emboldened the Castro dictatorship and its Soviet backing.
The US invaded the Bay of Pigs because they wanted to provoke an uprising against Castro. Their invaders were Cubans who had become American citizens, so it would look like Cubans were having a rebellion against their own government, and that the US wasn't involved.
