He became famouse for finding the Comstock lode, which made him extremly rich. This previous "answer" could not be more wrong. He neither discovered the Comstock silver mine or became rich from it. He was left behind to guard the house when the last of the 2 real discovers tried to get to California. Comstock made the claim for himself when nobody returned. He eventually sold all his claims for $11,000. He shot himself years later destitute in Montana. My Grandmother's name was Comstock.
