The fall of Atlanta in 1864 severely damaged Confederate logistics but not fatally. A major operational success, the capture of the city produced only limited strategic results. Sherman had taken the city despite the failure of a major feature of Grant's plans, for the late occupation of Mobile, Alabama had very little impact on Confederate concentration against Sherman. Additionally, the failure of Union General Banks on the Red River in Texas, truly ended Grant's intention to place a powerful Union army at Confederate Joseph Johnson's rear position.
